Cadbury’s popular Creme Egg is under fire after makers pull off a startling campaign featuring the ever so famous ‘gay kiss’.
According to media reports, many people couldn’t believe what they were seeing on their television screens when the makers at Cadbury pulled off an advertising stunt that shocked so many to the core.
While the gay kiss wasn’t the biggest problem for many, the unique methods used to promote the chocolate egg are what people couldn’t get over. In the same way, some explained how the brand attempted to sexualize a popular food item. And the fact that kids are a massive target audience, people felt that this was just plain unacceptable in so many ways. Therefore, as you can probably expect, a petition was soon on the way.
Here are the latest updates on the strange advert that might make you lose your appetite for more than one reason.
25,000 people sign petition over Creme Egg Advert
More than 25,000 people voiced their opinion on the controversial Creme Egg Advert recently. Enraged with fury, the petition called for the banning of Cadbury’s latest advertising campaign. And in case you’re wondering why, well one look at the ad is all it takes.
Featuring two gay men kissing, this was certainly something that the masses didn’t expect. But why would such a successful brand pull off such an offensive campaign in the first place? Yes, that’s the biggest question on so many people’s minds.
Released last month, Cadbury made it a point to show the world a different approach towards their ever so famous product. And for them, the occasion was big too. It was to honor the decadent chocolate treat.
An ad that disappointed so many
Featuring a real-life couple that comprised of Dale Moran and his partner Callum Sterling, the ad shows the lovebirds sharing the chocolate Creme Egg treat via an intimate kiss.point 180 | Moreover, when several people praised Cadbury for its unique sense of inclusivity, others had something else on their minds.point 286 | 1
Moreover, they felt it was necessary to raise their voice before it was too late. And that meant making a petition go viral that banned the advert permanently. Some went as far as terming it offensive for the entire Christian community too.
Today, you can find the petition posted on a famous website called CitizenGo. This platform usually promotes such campaigns that routinely take on various conservative petitions. For instance, it was one of the first to display decriminalization of abortions as well as LGBTQ rights.
The masses have their say
The petition boldly outlines how the advert needs to get eliminated from a number of platforms. Moreover, it described the kiss between the gay couple as sexually provocative and highly charged too.
“By selecting to feature a couple of the same sex, Cadbury seems as if it intended to cause great controversy,” the petition read. In addition, it talked about how the LGBT community is also against the ad and expressed their great disapproval and dislike regarding the campaign.
Shocking many with its bold words, the advert’s petition claimed that it played a vital role in grooming children too. And that’s because it exposes the young generation to sexualized content openly.
Recently, one of the members of the gay couple, Sterling responded to the great criticism that surrounds this matter. Moreover, he shared his thoughts and views on the backlash.
“It’s ok when an ad sexualizes a woman… just to benefit the male gaze. And it makes others feel out of place if they don’t live up to certain standards,” he claimed. “But it isn’t ok to have an ad in 2021 comprising of a multi-racial gay couple.”
Meanwhile, Cadbury also hit back at critics. They also defended their actions by calling it inclusivity. What are your thoughts on the matter? Do let us know in the comments section.
